About Cufflinks
The forerunner of today鈥檚 shirt first appeared in the early-16th century, its ruffled wristband finished with small openings on either side that tied together with "cuff strings." Although cuff strings would remain popular well into the nineteenth century, it was during the reign of Louis XIV that shirt sleeves started to be fastened with boutons de manchette, or "sleeve buttons," typically identical pairs of colored glass buttons joined together by a short, linked chain.
Over time, the cuff link developed and became a more sophisticated part of a man鈥檚 wardrobe, especially for tuxedo usage and formal attire. With the varying types of stones, precious metals, fabrics, and design, the cuff link became the new well-dressed man鈥檚 staple.
Selection Tips
There are several types and factors to consider on how to choose cufflinks that will be suited for your style and taste. Keep in mind on personality, color scheme and occasion. The three kinds of cufflinks here may help you about choosing.
1. Novelty cufflinks - this are cufflinks that are used for fun and could add funk and break off the seriousness of the attire. They are sometimes designed according to your hobbies, work or for fun.
2. Classic collection - they are simple designs and exude elegance. These pieces are worn on special events and shirts that are paired with tuxedos. They can be sometimes customized to be embellished with precious stones or customized with your initials. An example would be the Hematite cufflinks, a style that could be worn for the most formal occasion or events. Hematites are precious mineral usually colored gray, silver or brown.
3. Contemporary - this is a combination of both designs that could be worn for everyday work, job interview or simple events. Such as a dinner party or in the office. The Paua Shell cufflinks are a good example for this category. Paua Shell cufflinks could be worn for a more festive occasion and daily wear to the office.
